This installation is for a HO-Scale Intermountain SD40-2W using a TCS IB-MB2 with a built in KA2 Keep-Alive™ device and WOW121-Diesel decoder and was performed by TCS.

Important Soldering Tip:
Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. It will damage it. Use only Rosin core solder approved for electronics use.
We recommend to use only Kester "44" rosin core, SN63PB37, .015" diameter, part number 24-6337-0007.

HO-Scale Intermountain SD40-2W prior to TCS IB-MB2 and WOW121-Diesel decoder installation


In order to remove the shell, we must first remove the front and rear couplers screws, the couplers and their housings.

With the couplers and their housings removed, the shell can be lifted up and off of the locomotives chassis.
Above is a view of the chassis with the shell removed

Cut and remove the fasteners that hold the wires in place and identify the wiring layout.
Remove 4 screws as indicated in red, setting them aside for reinstallation later.


Remove the original lighting board and being careful to preserve the plugs, unclip the connectors
as well as the original speaker housing by removing the two screws on either side of it as indicated above.      

Uitlizing the original screws, attach the 1B-MB2 motherboard to the chassis, the plug in the original connectors onto the motherboard in
the appropriate locations as per the included wiring guide. With the 35 x 16mm speaker wired and mounted into the INT-SH1 enclosure,
using the 2 original screws, attach the assembly to the frame. Plug in the WOW121 diesel decoder.

To ensure a neat and tidy appearance and minimize the chance of pinched wires and shorts when
inserting them into the shell, lace the wires into a harness.

Finally, place the locomotives shell back on and reintsall the front and rear couplers and their housings. With this installation, you can independently control the front and rear headlights and marker numberboard lights.

You have now installed a TCS IB-MB2 with a built in KA2 Keep-Alive™ and WOW121-Diesel decoder into your HO-Scale Intermountain SD40-2W.

Other solder tips: When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more then a 1/64 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire then half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
